Gounod Save the Queen. Francesca Timperi & Giuseppe Lupis. Autunno Genzanese, Genzano, Italy. November 26, 2011
Gounod Save the Queen is built on two different themes: Gounod’s Marche Funebre d’une Marionette, and God Save the Queen, also known as My Country Tis of Thee. These two themes do not have anything in common: not rhythm, not harmonic structure. The two performers are forced to play together, although they seem to have different ideas on what it should be performed! As the work progresses from an initial clash throughout the variation-like sections, a common ground is finally found. Or is it? The whole work is indeed ironic.
